What’s inside

3 things in every issue:

1. The letter

Hobbies, husbanding, dad duties, business, philosophy, or whatever’s been rattling around since the last one. Some months it’s about a shed.

Dry, self aware, vulnerable, and human, but not serious. Anti-macho testosterone, anti-anti-man. Men need a space to step up in society that isn’t owned by a political spectrum and media system full of hate.

I’m not your therapist or dad. Just another dude looking to make the world a better place for other dudes.

Issue 07 · The Shed

Dear Male Snail,
I built a shed I did not need.

It will hold more stuff that we will probably never use. It already has three extra hoses, a couple ‘someday’ projects, and the broken lawnmower in it.

My wife asked for it because the garage was full. Because I stole half of it for my workbench, but that’s not important.

…

Slowly,
The Male Snail.

2. Something man made

A sticker, a print, a card, a 3d print, or whatever’s speaking to me that month. Probably on theme, but no promises. May be a prank instead, no apologies, you signed up for a guy letter.

Nothing is trying to look expensive. I want to connect and share with you for a moment, and then help you do the same with someone else. I’m not giving you one more thing to stash in your desk drawer and throw away in 5 years. I’d rather give you a snail sticker that you put on your tool box and forget about until someone asks.

3. This month’s recipe obsession

A recipe that I actually made and actually tastes good, not generated by AI or a food influencer. Printed big enough to read with your hands covered in something. I probably cooked it more times than I’ll admit to here. My wife has definitely asked me, politely, to move on.

You can ignore the recipe. The card makes a good bookmark.

Just a dude

Ian at a Cardinals game with his two boys and his wife, the ballpark and the St. Louis skyline behind them

I’m Ian, I live in St. Louis with a garage of my hobbies I haven’t gotten to, and kids toys that get used daily. I have two cast irons that only I am allowed to wash. I’m not a therapist or a coach or anything else with credentials that matter.

I’m bad at staying connected to my male friends. Heck, I’m bad at building connections to other males at all. We’re not supposed to express emotion and yet that is so key to deep human connection.

Is this an excuse to send letters to some of my old friends and reconnect? Yes.

But also, as a dude and a father of two boys, I care deeply that men are increasingly finding it hard to fit into society. Male loneliness, suicide rates, job loss, purposeless… all of it up and to the right. The worst kind of trend.

There has to be space for good men in society or all that will be left is the toxicity that is growing today. This is a slow fight, good change takes time, but it has to get started. So join me and fight to make it better, one slow letter at a time.

Slowly,
Ian

Questions

Snails are hermaphrodites.

Correct.

Do I have to write anything?

Basic Snails do not. Mafia and Don members receive a card to write, but you don’t have to send it. But honestly, you should skip 10 minutes of doomscrolling to write. It’ll feel amazing.

What if I miss the 15th?

Nothing bad. You’re charged the same as anyone and your first envelope is next month’s issue instead of this one, because this one is already at the printer. We don’t prorate. Mostly because it kills the .69 joke.

Can I cancel?
Can I buy it for someone else?

Of course. Probably most of the men in here started as a gift from their mom, wife, sister, girlfriend, or guy friend who knew he needed it. Here’s the gift checkout.

Who sees my address?

Snails: we print it and the postal service reads it.

Mafia & Don: whoever your randomly matched Mafia pen pal is that month will also receive an envelope addressed to you.

I’m not in the US.

Then we can’t post to you yet, and we’d rather say so than take your money and work it out afterwards. It’s the postage: inside the US a letter costs one known thing, and past the border it depends on which country and on how heavy the envelope is. Guess that wrong and either you’ve overpaid or every issue quietly loses money.

What decides which countries open is how many people ask. Ask about shipping outside the US — it takes a second, the email is optional, and it’s the only thing we have to go on.
